If you’ve never visited a chiropractor before, it’s completely normal to feel a little uncertain about what’s ahead. Whether you’re dealing with back pain, neck stiffness, headaches, or a lingering injury, taking that first step toward chiropractic care is one of the best decisions you can make for your long-term health. At Lake Stevens Chiropractic, we want you to feel informed, comfortable, and confident before you ever walk through our door.

Here’s exactly what to expect at the chiropractor from your very first phone call to the moments after your adjustment.

What Happens Before Your First Appointment

Getting started with chiropractic care is simple. Before your visit, you’ll complete a patient intake form that covers your current symptoms, health history, past injuries, medications, and any prior imaging you’ve had done (such as X-rays or MRIs). This information helps your chiropractor build a complete picture of your health before the appointment even begins.

We offer a free consultation for new patients, so there’s no pressure and no commitment just an honest conversation about how we can help.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

To make your first visit as smooth as possible, bring the following:

  • Your insurance card and photo ID
  • A list of any current medications or supplements you’re taking
  • Any prior imaging (X-rays, MRI scans) related to your condition
  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing — you may be asked to move, bend, or lie down during the exam

Arriving 10–15 minutes early gives you time to complete any remaining paperwork without feeling rushed.

Your Initial Consultation

Once you’re checked in, you’ll sit down with Dr. Hanson, Dr. Song, or Dr. Mike for a one-on-one consultation. This is your opportunity to share what’s been going on with your body and ask any questions you have. No concern is too small, and no question is off-limits.

The goal of this conversation is to understand not just where you’re hurting, but why. Chiropractic care focuses on treating the root cause of your discomfort — not just the symptoms.

Questions Your Chiropractor Will Ask

Your chiropractor will ask a series of questions to better understand your condition and your overall health. These may include:

  • Where is your pain located, and does it radiate or travel to other areas?
  • When did your symptoms start, and was there a specific incident or injury involved?
  • How would you describe the pain — sharp, dull, aching, burning, or throbbing?
  • What makes it better or worse — certain movements, sitting, sleeping, or activity?
  • What is your work and daily routine like — do you sit at a desk, stand for long hours, or do physical labor?
  • Have you received chiropractic care before, and if so, what was your experience?

Your answers directly shape the direction of your examination and any future treatment plan. Being honest and thorough here makes a real difference in the care you receive.

The Chiropractic Examination – What to Expect

After your consultation, your doctor will perform a comprehensive physical examination. This is not a standard check-up — it’s a targeted assessment designed to evaluate how your spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system are functioning together.

Posture Analysis and Range of Motion Testing

One of the first things your chiropractor will assess is your posture. Poor posture whether from sitting at a desk, working a physically demanding job, or recovering from an old injury which is one of the most common contributors to spinal misalignment and chronic pain.

You’ll be observed from multiple angles as your chiropractor looks for imbalances in the shoulders, hips, and spine. From there, you’ll go through a series of active and passive movement tests to measure your range of motion. These tests help identify which areas of the spine or joints are restricted, stiff, or moving abnormally. This is where we can determine whether spinal decompression will be good for you.

Your chiropractor may also check muscle strength, reflexes, and nerve function to get a complete picture of your musculoskeletal health.

What a Chiropractic Adjustment Feels Like

This is the question most first-time patients are curious and sometimes nervous about. The truth is, for most people, a chiropractic adjustment is a surprisingly comfortable experience.

A chiropractic adjustment involves a controlled, precise movement applied to a specific joint in the spine or extremities. The goal is to restore normal motion, reduce tension, and support better nervous system function. Most patients describe the sensation as a gentle pressure followed by a quick release — and often immediate relief.

What about the “popping” sound? That sound is simply the release of gas (carbon dioxide) from within the joint space — similar to cracking your knuckles. It is not bones breaking or grinding, and it is completely normal.

Not every adjustment produces a sound, and the absence of a pop does not mean the adjustment didn’t work. Our doctors tailor every technique to the individual patient’s needs, condition, and comfort level. For patients who need more than a standard adjustment, we also offer advanced options like Chiropractic Biophysics and traction therapy to support lasting structural change.

You may feel mild soreness or fatigue in the 24–48 hours following your first adjustment — this is a normal response as your body begins to adapt. Most patients notice improved mobility, reduced tension, and a greater sense of ease shortly after.

Do Chiropractors Take X-Rays?

X-rays are not always necessary on the first visit, but they can be an important diagnostic tool in certain situations. Your chiropractor may recommend imaging if:

  • You’ve experienced trauma or a recent accident
  • You’re reporting numbness, tingling, or radiating pain into your arms or legs
  • There is reason to suspect a structural issue with the spine
  • Prior treatment elsewhere has not provided relief

X-rays help rule out fractures, disc problems, or other conditions that could affect how care is delivered. If imaging is needed, we will explain exactly why and what we’re looking for.

Is Chiropractic Care Right for You?

Chiropractic care is a natural, non-invasive approach to health that works well for a wide range of conditions. It focuses on spinal alignment, joint function, and nervous system health — helping the body recover and perform the way it was designed to.

That said, a great chiropractor will always be upfront with you about what chiropractic care can and cannot address, and will refer out when a different type of treatment is the better path forward.

Who Benefits Most from Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care may be an excellent fit if you are dealing with:

  • Back pain or neck pain — whether from an injury, poor posture, or daily wear and tear
  • Headaches and migraines — spinal manipulation has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of tension headaches and migraines
  • Sports injuries — muscle strains, joint sprains, and overuse injuries that respond well to hands-on care
  • Work injuries — repetitive motion strain, lifting injuries, or accidents on the job
  • Post-accident recovery — whiplash and soft tissue injuries from car accidents
  • General stiffness or reduced mobility — when you want to move better and feel better without relying on medication

Chiropractic care is also a great option for people who simply want to stay healthy and active over the long term. Many patients come in for regular maintenance care to prevent problems before they start.
